What is PP405?
A topical treatment: PP405 is a small molecule applied directly to the skin. 
  • Regenerative approach: It aims to "wake up" sleeping hair follicle stem cells to restart the hair growth cycle. 
  • Novel mechanism: It differs from current treatments by not relying on hormonal changes or growth factors and by avoiding systemic absorption into the bloodstream.

    How it works:
  • Targets stem cells:
    In cases of pattern baldness, hair follicles are not dead but dormant, with stem cells in a metabolic "sleep mode". 
    Reactivates growth:
  • PP405 reactivates these dormant stem cells, potentially causing them to enter the hair growth cycle again. 
    Clinical Development:
  • Phase 1:
    Early trials showed PP405 was well-tolerated and activated hair follicle stem cells. 
    Phase 2a:
  • A more recent Phase 2a trial assessed safety and preliminary efficacy, with positive results showing a significant increase in hair density for some patients. 
    Phase 3:
  • Pelage Pharmaceuticals expects to start Phase 3 trials in 2026 to further test the safety and effectiveness of PP405 in a larger population.
